surface design method

Conventional metal car body panels are either made using deep drawing with huge presses or by a craftsman who will work days or even weeks on a single panel. These huge presses are very expensive and only suitable for a single panel, thus several panels require several presses. The craftsman, due to his working hours and level of experience, is not the cheapest solution either. So, in order to produce decently priced body panels for a low volume automobile such as the Voisin, another method had to be found.

The solution we came up with is to use so-called ruled surfaces. A ruled surface can be seen as two curves which are connected through a series of straight lines, or rulers. These type of surfaces can be placed under prestress onto the car, requiring virtually no skilled labour. Over time our insights grew and our understanding of the influence of these rulers on the appearance of the panels developed to such a degree, that it became possible to make ruled, developable surfaces, seemingly without any rulers! The absence of straight or flat edges creates the impression that these panels are actually doubly curved. So, the body panels of the Voisin are made out of very special ruled surfaces. A patent application for this unique method to design and control these type of surfaces has been filed.

Because the sheet metal parts require no deformation before they are placed, our method looks very promising for application outside the automotive industry. It could be used in areas ranging from ship design to architecture. Basically, any low volume sheet metal product can be made using this technique. As an experiment, we have designed several NABLA bulbs, which dramatically reduce the fuel consumption of ships. These are vessels that will sometimes consume up to several thousands litres of fuel an hour! Today, these bulbs are fitted on every large cargo ship, but they are far too complex and costly to make for barges, let alone for retro fitting existing ships. With our method, the bulb can be designed and fitted for a fraction of the costs in a fraction of the time it would normally cost. Imagine what that would do for the environment...



Highly efficient Cooling System

Most car climate control systems have the same issues: they are an energy drain, they are highly inefficient, they steadily leak cooling fluid, and the currents of cold air create discomfort. We have come up with an invention (patent pending) with a significantly better COP, without any hazardous cooling fluids and no environmental impact whatsoever. We are currently developing this invention into a fully operational prototype, that will be used in the Voisin A-JT.

Highly efficient Energy Storage System

Energy storage takes up about 50-100 liter of the interior space of an automobile, and in transport vehicles up to 400 liter. In cars that have an extra LPG storage system, the total volume of effective space decreases accordingly. Avions Voisin has developed a volumeefficient energy storage system, which basically restores all that storage or cabin space to the driver. Our system is based on wellknown and well-tested production techniques, and it offers advantages in vehicle dynamics (better weight distribution) as in vehicle safety. This solution has been filed for patent protection.

Clever car entry system

Ever increasing use of the automobile, combined with decreasing parking facilities have made it increasingly difficult, especially in large cities, to get in and out of your car without doing damage, either to your car and/to the car(s) next to you. Besides that, climbing in and out of your vehicle, usually comes with serious loss of dignity.
Avions Voisin have developed a car entry system that will spare you both the material and the psychological damage.

Adaptable Car Body Construction and Easy Assembly

A major issue with today’s automobiles is the fact that the time and cost of development and production of dies for car body panels is such, that mass production is a necessity, and flexibility and rapid change of design, an impossibility. An other aspect of the usual type of car body design and production is the fact that cars have become extremely vulnerable to dents and dings. Finally, modern cars are very hard to disassemble because of their design and the use of assembly techniques like gluing, welding and riveting. This makes a trip to the garage usually a costly affair, and above all, it has a very negative impact on recycling. Avions Voisin has been working with improved methods of design and production, that allows for adaptive design, minimizes initial production costs and better assembly techniques. We will use as many of these methods in the new Voisin.

Adaptable Car Interior

Car interiors are becoming more and more like wombs. Like the double-curved exteriors. These forms are understood to provide a lovely sense of security to those inhabit them. Well, that may be, but there are also people who want their car interior look like it was made for them, to suit their purposes, their lifestyles. It is strange that we put so much attention to space, function and adaptability in architecture and so little in the spaces in which we transport ourselves. Avions Voisin has therefore come up with excellent solutions to provide the client with all options to create his or her
own interior.

Insightful Instrument Panel

One thing we found missing in today’s instrument panels is a total lack of genuine feeback on what is happening under the hood. One look at the instrument display of your average car will give you no information whatsoever on what is really happening: the rotation of your crankshaft, your transmission, your driveshaft, and what actually happens when you change gear. Our instrument panel will let you see what actually goes on inside your drivetrain, and how your actions relate to mechanical funcions, which will restore your feeling with the very heart of your vehicle, and that beautiful piece of machinery.

Safe Car-function Operation

Every time we take our eyes off the road, there is a slim chance that things will go wrong. We have devised a way that will keep your eyes on the road, whilst changing an audio CD, or the target temperature in your car. The idea for such a functionality would include the use of popular hardware such as the iPhone. To keep such an application operable and functional, we intend to keep it as simple as we can, at the same time reducing the need for all sorts of meters, slides, switches and knobs on your instrument panel.
