Prototype

The Avions Voisin A-JT Laboratoire has been designed from an original perspective, with its small headlights and straight lines, quite literally ‘breaking the mould’ in present-day car design.

The full scale aluminum model provided the necessary insights in how the 3D drawings worked out in real life. With this knowledge in mind, the design process developed, all the while remaining true to the original concept. Continuous experimenting and fine tuning, led to a harmonious design. Most striking perhaps is the newly designed grille which gives the Voisin an imposing and confident character, with a chic and elegant look.

The lower curve of the grille is a clear reference to the smooth and quiet DynaStart, a starter motor developed by Voisin himself and a trademark design feature of the later Voisins. The distinctive crease line over the door section is now extended up to the rear, making the car immediately more fluent and coherent as a whole. This modification gives the car body a slim, dynamic and delicate appearance, which is essential for a large automobile like the Voisin.

The belt line and the character lines are lowered compared to the previous study, in order to create a better sight for the passengers, while adding balance to the Voisin’s body lines. The straight lines are a reflection of our surface design method and run smoothly from the front to the rear. The elevated roofline increases rear view from the driver's seat as well as head room for the rear passengers. Short overhangs and long wheelbase, intensified by the horizontal lines, contribute to the sporty and elegant proportions. By striving for the esthetic quality of the car body and thereby extending the technical boundaries of our car body production method, we are now looking at a Voisin with great coherence; its iconic design very well preserved.

Adaptability

Customer expectations are changing rapidly, we have become used to instant delivery, highly individualized experiences and continuous improvement. This doesn’t go well together with costly and lengthy R&D processes, multinational and multidisciplinary teams, all amounting to massive initial costs for each new model to come out.

A safe and simple basic platform is the skeleton of a highly adaptable system for interior and exterior design. The key elements of the basic factory model will be clarity, elegance of construction and space. At the same time this structure will provide us with the means to have the Voisin almost entirely adaptable to new market insights and the personal taste of the client




In order to test our car body production system we have built the above model using developable aluminium body panels on a wooden framework instead of a traditional clay model.

Efficiency

Efficiency drives our use of environmental, material and financial resources. Less is indeed more. Less weight and less clutter, mean more space, and increased fuel efficiency. Our aim is to be as efficient and effective as we can in every aspect of the automobile, whether it be climate control, energy storage or the cost of assembly and disassembly. In these and other areas we have come up with new ideas some of which have been submitted for patent protection.

At the same time efficiency means that we concentrate on the added value of the Voisin. Some complex automobile parts are no longer a ‘reason-to-buy’. Compared to the early automobiles, engines -through the course of a century of engineering- reached such a degree of perfection that they are becoming mere commodities. Instead of the engine or transmission, main reasons to buy are personal taste: brand and car design.


Design study of the Voisin A-JT

Individuality

If there is a scarce good in today’s automobile market, it is probably uniqueness. In fact, uniqueness can only be obtained through cars that went out of production decades ago, or through cars that are unaffordable and usually lead a life of seclusion, somewhere in Oman or Dubai.

Unlike these so-called super cars, the Voisin is a saloon, and it will come at the price of a top-of-the-line Audi A6, although production numbers will be somewhere in the line of the Bugatti Veyron. That is about all the Voisin will have in common with both. It will be one of a kind, and it can be, because it doesn’t have to appeal to the taste of tens of thousands across the globe. The Voisin will have a signature design that relates to mass-produced cars, like couture relates to confection. Importantly, the design will be the elegant outcome of mere rational principles, like most of Gabriel Voisin’s creations. It will not be the victim of design for design’s sake.
